Crossroads
Family
There’s really a sense of camaraderie here.
Because of a family situation, I was forced to drop out of high school and work. While I did manage to get my GED, my life was very unsettled. I went from job to job and city to city. I was really tired of that and I knew I could do better. I was really looking for stability. I wanted to get an education. I wanted to surround myself with people who cared about me. I joined the Navy.
On a professional level, the Navy has been great. I am in information technology and I am currently enrolled at the University of Maryland. I intend to get my bachelor’s degree in computer science.
On a personal level, the Navy has become sort of a surrogate family. My Chief, who is retired now, was like a father to me. He helped me when I picked out my car. We still talk to each other and get together from time to time.
Most of my friends are in the Navy. I know I am never alone. I want to stay in the Navy as long as I can. I keep on progressing at so many levels. I love it.
