The Navy Deployed
Unit: USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (“Ike”) (CVN-69), Nimitz-class aircraft carrier
Mission: Overseas deployment
Location: Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf
Crew: 5,680
Port Visits: After extensive upgrades and overhaul, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), known in the fleet as the ‘Ike,’ returned to the sea — forward deployed, ready for action, and better than ever.
With orders to deploy to the Mediterranean, Ike’s mission involved a number of port calls to allied nations in the region. With her aircraft and the other ships of her battle group (including destroyers, cruisers, attack submarines, and a supply ship), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower defended the right to freedom of the seas for America and her allies.
Sailors on the deployment had the opportunity of a lifetime to explore much of Europe and parts of the Middle East. Ports in France, Spain, Turkey, Greece, and the United Arab Emirates featured major cultural centers, outdoor recreation, abundant historical sites — and some fabulous beaches.
