Units

Seabee classifications fall into five categories arranged by where and how they work: Brigades and Regiments that function as the “supervisors” of other Seabee units, Mobile, Amphibious, Underwater and Shore divisions. Each group has its own niche and specific job unique to their abilities.

Supervisors

Naval Construction Brigade (NCB)
There are two NCBs, one for the Atlantic and one for the Pacific. This group of individuals supervises two or more Naval Construction Regiments in a specific area or military operation. The NCB reviews preliminary construction plans, programs and construction capabilities, assigns deadlines and distributes resources. They make sure each regiment has the tools, materials and people they need to get their assigned jobs done in a timely manner.
Naval Construction Regiment (NCR)
There are two training regiments, two active regiments and four reserve regiments. They oversee two or more Naval Mobile Construction Battalions or other Naval Construction Force units within a specific region or in support of a specific military operation. They make sure each battalion has the tools, materials and people they need to get their assigned jobs done in a timely manner. If they don’t have the proper resources, they go back to the NCB.

Mobile

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB)
These men and women are the front line construction workers of the military, supporting all of the armed forces. They’re trained in wood, steel, bricklaying and concrete construction as well as well drilling and repair of battle-damaged buildings. In an emergency or disaster, they help rescue and recover. Because they’re fully trained in combat procedures, they are able to work and defend themselves at construction sites and travel through unsecured areas where other fighting might be taking place.

Amphibious

Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB)
This group works hand in hand with the Marines. After the Marines hit the beach, the ACBs go in armed with demolition compounds. For self-protection during this construction period, they are trained in hand-to-hand combat.

Underwater

Underwater Construction Team (UCT)
This team constructs, inspects and repairs wharves, piers, underwater pipelines, moorings, bridges, boat ramps and launches. They must be able to SCUBA dive up to 190 feet to perform work underwater.

Shore

Construction Battalion Unit (CBU)
These units help maintain buildings and other facilities at naval bases. They also build fleet hospitals during wartime. They ensure the hospitals have water, electricity, heat and air conditioning, waste disposal and other sanitation functionality.
Public Works Department (PWD)
This group supports and helps maintain water, electricity, heat and air conditioning, waste disposal and other sanitation functionality at advanced naval bases. This team keeps the bases up and running.
