NROTC
Application Process
Follow These Five Easy and Important Steps:
-
Step 1 — College Board Score Release
Tip: Take the SAT or the ACT as early as possible.
Authorize the testing agency to release your scores directly to the NROTC Scholarship Program (program code 0656). No other means of providing scores to the program is acceptable. Scores forwarded directly from the applicant or a school will not be accepted.
- The minimum SAT scores are 530 Critical Reading, 520 Math.
- The minimum ACT scores are 21 Math, 22 English.
- Or graduate in the top 10% of your class.
Scores will be accepted no earlier than Feb. 15 and will not be accepted after Dec. 31.
-
Step 2 — Fill Out Your College Application(s)
Tip: Apply to at least three NROTC-affiliated colleges or universities you’re interested in attending.
(Your NROTC application will not be reviewed otherwise.)
Acceptance to an NROTC college or university is the sole responsibility of the NROTC Scholarship Program applicant.
Because each NROTC unit has a limited capacity for incoming freshmen, you may not get your first choice and may be assigned to your second- or third-choice schools.
It is advisable to apply to the school(s) of your choice by Nov. 1. -
Step 3 — Schedule an Appointment for Application Processing
TIP: You can start your online application now.
Your application package must be completed at the local processing station no later than Jan. 20.
The applicant is responsible for completing the final application. Therefore, you must take prompt action to ensure the release of official school transcripts and references, and to verify their receipt by the processing station prior to the Jan. 20 completion date.
-
Step 4 — Scholarship Selection Board Consideration

All scholarship applicants will be notified in writing.

Step 5 — Physical Qualifications, Travel, And Enrollment
Tip: FYI, you will be scheduled for a physical examination.
During the summer before your freshman year, the Chief of Naval Education and Training will send travel authorization letters to all physically qualified, four-year scholarship nominees who have been accepted for fall-term admission by NROTC colleges or universities.
Four-year scholarship selectees will be reimbursed for travel expenses at government rates.
Upon commencement of the fall term and after all physical qualification requirements have been met, scholarship selectees will be sworn in as Midshipmen. A subsistence allowance of $250 per month will start from that date. (Note: The subsistence allowance is not paid during the summer, but summer pay is received for required training periods, i.e., Midshipman cruises.) The subsistence allowance increases as you progress through school.
Tips for a more complete online application:
- Make sure to list all activities, sports, clubs, volunteer work, etc., that you’re involved in
- Provide complete data and obtain a projected course and activities list for your senior year
- Acquire teacher recommendations
- Apply early (watch deadlines) — the earlier you submit your application, the better your chance of attending the school of your choice
- Remember: The Navy needs technical majors
