There are more than 925,000 insect species on the planet. And our brave Sailors and Marines come in to contact with a greater variety of them than most people ever will. Since insects can carry numerous diseases, Navy Entomologists are essential in protecting servicemembers from bug-borne hazards.

What will you do?

Perform a wide range of interesting and exciting duties, primarily focused on preventing vector-borne diseases in the Navy and Marine Corps. You’ll plan, direct and participate in operational, consultative, training, quarantine and research programs for the prevention and control of nuisance pests and disease. Conduct surveillance and research on disease- and nuisance-causing organisms – including insects, venomous plants and animals, rodents and other pests. Develop and evaluate innovative control methods. Provide technical guidance, practical training and on-site assistance to risk management specialists worldwide.

You could also provide training to military and civilian personnel from the medical and other commands of the Navy, as well as perform in operational and consultative roles on the staffs of preventive medicine activities in the United States and several overseas locations

Requirements

Basic Requirements

  1. Master’s or doctoral degree in entomology or closely related field in which the coursework taken had an emphasis on entomology
  2. GPA of 3.2 or better on a 4.0 scale in graduate study and a 3.5 or better in entomology coursework
  3. Coursework taken should include 30 or more hours (graduate and undergraduate) in entomology, including courses in the areas of medical entomology, pest management, insect taxonomy, insect morphology, immature insects, insect ecology, insect toxicology, insect physiology and statistics

Preferred Requirements

  1. Completion of 3-5 hours minimum in each of the following areas: acarology, parasitology, invertebrate zoology, computer science, statistics, epidemiology and environmental health
  2. Experience in surveillance and control of disease vectors or medically important insects
