Heading up laboratories in support of medical and scientific specialists. Ensuring accuracy of medical tests for young servicemembers and their families. And providing data that can help shape the future of the U.S. Navy.
What will you do?
As a Navy Medical Technologist, you’ll serve as a manager of state-of-the-art clinical laboratories in Navy hospitals in the United States and many foreign countries. You’ll be an integral member of the health-care team.
You will also help determine the presence, extent or absence of disease. Perform a full range of laboratory tests with responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of results. Report findings to specialists who use the information as a guideline for medical treatment. Supervise the efficient operation of laboratory facilities, including training site personnel. All in the pursuit of medical progress and maintenance of the strictest standards of scientific integrity.
You could become eligible for additional assignments as an educator at Navy laboratory schools or function as a staff officer in certain assignments.
Requirements
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and certification of completion of a one-year course of study in medical technology conducted by a school or program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS)
- Certified as a medical technologist by a national certifying agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the National Certification Agency (NCA) for Medical Laboratory Personnel
- Two years experience in a clinical laboratory as a medical technologist. Alternatively, the NAACLS program completion requirement may be waived if the applicant has at least four years documented laboratory technician experience
Preferred Requirements
- GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale with emphasis in major course work
- Supervisory experience in a hospital-based clinical laboratory is desired. Clinical experience in blood banking is a plus
- Evidence of continuing education through course work, seminars, workshops, attendance at professional meetings, etc.
