Extreme pressures. Withering temperatures. And just about every other environmental extreme on Earth. And key to operating in these environments is an understanding of their effect on the human body. Navy Physiologists conduct research and provide recommendations for attuning our Sailors and Marines to perform in any environmental extreme.

What will you do?

Apply innovative technologies in physiology and medicine to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate exercise/training-related injuries. Your laboratory research facilities may include exercise/work physiology, biochemistry laboratories, climatic chambers or a swim flume. Your field research potential consists of aquatic and terrestrial climatic extremes including hot, cold, dry and wet environments, as well as altitude.

You’ll analyze physiological and chemical functions of living organisms – human and animal. Conduct basic, applied and advanced research dealing with physiological responses to the stresses of military environments, including temperature, altitude, pressure, acceleration, and exposure to hazardous chemicals and radiation. Recommend countermeasures to ensure maximum efficiency and safety of military personnel.

You could also work with noted scientists and engineers to help plan, direct and coordinate applied research and advanced technology projects essential to the Department of the Navy.

Requirements

Basic Requirements

  1. Doctoral-degree level of training in physiology preferred, but physiological aspects of other closely related disciplines (e.g., neuroscience, pharmacology) will be considered
  2. Research emphasis in cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, environmental, exercise, work or hyperbaric physiology

Preferred Requirements

  1. One or two years of postdoctorate experience in physiology research
  2. Publication in refereed physiological journals as senior author
