Hospital Ships
From providing medical support to our deployed troops to providing critical care and humanitarian relief after a disaster, serving aboard a Navy hospital ship is one of the most unique experiences anyone in the medical field could ask for.
Currently the Navy has two hospital ships, USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy. Each vessel contains 12 fully equipped operating rooms, a 1,000-bed hospital facility and state-of-the-art capabilities once confined to land-based facilities.
And whether it’s helping tsunami victims during the 2005 mission to Southeast Asia or being first on the scene after Hurricane Katrina here at home, serving on the USNS Comfort or USNS Mercy means serving a greater cause and making a real difference.
Other Environments
Hospitals
Leading-edge hospitals are standard working environments for health-care personnel. But in the Navy, you may work at a hospital in Okinawa, Japan, or one in Rota, Spain.
Clinics
Navy medical clinics are found around the globe. You may find yourself working at a medical clinic in London, England, or a branch medical clinic in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Surface Ships
All ships have some type of medical facility on board. The size of the medical facility and staff on board depends on the type of ship.
Submarines
Submarines usually have a medic or Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) on board. IDCs are highly trained and experienced Senior Hospital Corpsmen (HM) who serve as the sole medical authority.
Fleet Marine Force (FMF)
Fleet Marine Force could be your chance to work side by side with the Marines in support of Marine Corps missions and assignments both stateside and overseas.
Aircraft Squadrons
Each squadron typically will have a Flight Surgeon and a few Hospital Corpsmen (HM). When not deployed with the squadron, medical personnel will usually work at a nearby clinic or hospital.
