They land on beaches, transporting troops and equipment for combat. They glide hundreds of feet below the water’s surface, providing security to a hospital ship on a humanitarian mission. Carriers

Aircraft carriers are the backbone of America’s Navy, a fleet that supports U.S. interests and encourages peace around the globe. Typically traveling in battle groups, these vessels operate in international waters without needing permission for landing or overflight rights. Each is a self-sustained floating airport that’s sovereign U.S. territory. When deployed, they operate with their own ZIP code, post office, hospital, dental clinic, barbershops, athletic facilities and chapels. More than 18,000 meals are prepared daily and each of the crew has e-mail access. read on Carriers

Through all this, the Navy has found individuals to serve proudly in the “Silent Service,” where standards are high and victories are often kept secret.

In order to carry out their missions, submariners are equipped with some of the most high-tech equipment in the world, from special mini-subs for inserting SEAL teams into hostile target areas to ballistic missiles to advanced computers and sonar equipment. read on Submarines
